In 2018, U.S. newspaper circulation was at its lowest figure since 1940, the year when circulation information was first made available. According to the Pew Research Center, in 2018, daily newspaper circulation (print and digital) was an estimated 28.6 million for weekday and 30.8 million for Sunday. That was a drop of 8% and 9%, respectively, from the previous year. Not surprisingly, ad revenue has also fallen precipitously, from $37.8 billion in 2008, when the Great Recession began, to $14.3 billion in 2018, a 62% decline. Even one of the wealthiest businessmen in the world, Warren Buffett, has sold his stake in newspapers. In January 2020, Berkshire Hathaway sold its newspapers to Lee Enterprises for $140 million. As more and more people get their news online or through social media, the newspaper becomes less and less valuable as a feasible advertising channel.
We now anticipate a 25.0% drop in radio advertising from 2019-2020. A decrease in radio ad spending is likely to limit the growth of the radio advertising market. A decline in ad spending on traditional channels is part of a long-standing trend. The companies are investigating alternative business models and evaluating innovative emerging technologies such as online fixed programmatic display and mobile video that provide consumers with instant access to the content. With rising competition from digital avenues, especially social media, along with dried up core ad revenue spend, our updated analysis on the three largest radio networks indicates the average unit ad rates per 30-second spot is expected to decline 18.2% in 2020 compared to 2019. As more customers tune to the news and music on their mobile devices the trend will continue to increase.
Direct Mail (Junk mail)
A number of surveys indicate that direct mail is losing ground to electronic alternatives such as email, social media, search, and mobile marketing. Almost 80% of the mailers interviewed for this study expect their print-based direct mail, as a percentage of total direct marketing budgets, to decline over the next three years. On average, print-based direct mail will decline from 49% to 36% of
their overall direct marketing budget from 2017 to 2020. The decline is relative to the lessening conversion rates and cost per aquisition. Email, Social media, and online programattic now demand the higest overall ROI. In simple terms, you’re throwing away your money on direct mail.
The estimated revenue of periodical publishers in the United States fell sharply in the past decade from 46 billion U.S. dollars in 2007 to just over 26 billion in 2019, and print advertising and subscription revenue is a sore point for even the larger media conglomerates like Meredith Corporation.
